John shrugs. "I'm not certain. You're not a farmer, desperate for answers. You're not scared of the Collapse. You're secure in who and what you are."

You're not prey, he says without saying.

Lark has plenty of secrets, but truth be told even he doesn't know what it would take for him to spill them. Even Alec hasn't heard them all; not the ones that are only half-formed, not the ones that are only could be's.

"Offering answers and protection from the Collapse seem like a very positive form of inquisition," he points out lightly.

"We can only give protection to those who are worthy," he says. "And the path to Eden's Gate is through me. And I walk people through Atonement."

An easy explanation.

"And I'm sure that's enough of an answer for most people," arching an eyebrow. It is not enough for Lark. You aren't the only one who sees through bullshit, John. "But we were talking about something deeper."

He takes a breath. "It's getting late," he tells him. "And Zack keeps an early morning."

"It is. Let's walk tomorrow night." You're not getting off the hook that easily.

"Assuming that I'm not exhausted by whatever he's got in mind for us." He stands up to walk back to his room.

"I'm sure we'll find a way," he smirks, and lets him go.
