Honestly, there’s a lot more he could say on the subject of shitty, abusive parents, but he also chooses not to.

Again, he puffs out a soft breath.

“You didn’t have to answer it, but I appreciate that you did.”

Even though it was well and truly horrible.

“Weekly check-ins seemed to work pretty well with the person I was paired with last month so that’s the main thing I’d like to do. I’m not looking to disrupt a routine you already have, especially if it works for you, so just let me know the time and place you’d like to meet up, and that’s what we’ll do.”

"And these check ins? What exactly did they entail?" he wonders softly.

He tilts his head a little.

“Kinda depends on you, really. The other guy was fine with me just coming to meet him at the same spot every week. We talked a bit, I asked how he was doing, if he needed anything, and then that was it. It wasn’t a long drawn out thing, and I don’t really aim for it to be that. If you wanted to do something different with the time, though, like go in the Enclosure and design some kind of scenario, I’m good with that too. I just like to see who I’m working with instead of sending a text.”

He shakes his head. "No. Nothing of the sort. I prefer something quiet. I don't need anything at the moment."

John tucks a strand of hair behind his ear. "Well, I appreciate you meeting me out here, Zack. I look forward to next week."

Zack lets out a soft hum.

“Sure thing. Same place?”

"Yes," he says.

"I like the view."

Zack nods once.

“Me too. Unless something comes up, I’ll see you here next week.”

With a nod, John leaves him there on the deck, hands in his pockets, whistling to himself.
